How to Wear the Most Controversial Look in Fashion

The ever-contentious Canadian tuxedo—an outfit made up of denim from head to toe. It’s a look that sparks strong feelings, but the industry consensus is that jean-centric style is a fashion DO right now. Building this bold look does come with some rules though, so we tapped celebrity stylist Krista Roser for an expert's advice.

Krista has been responsible for the style of some of the best-dressed stars of country music, including Cassadee Pope, Florida Georgia Line, and Kelsea Ballerini. Working in Nashville, Krista finds inspiration in iconic Americana outfitting but brings it to life in an of-the-moment, elevated fashion for her clients. Needless to say, classic double-denim falls under her area of know-how.  Here’s what she says about pulling it off.

First, and this tip isn’t exclusive to just a Canadian tux, make sure the pieces are fitted correctly. “Fit is always important when it comes to denim,” begins Krista. Whatever silhouette you’re working with, it should sit on your body in the way that it was intended to fit. If that means a trip to the tailor, it’s money well spent.

Once you’ve made sure that the items in your denim drawer all fit correctly, it’s time to select styles in the right washes. The key, according to Krista, is to coordinate your jean jacket or button-down shirt with a bottom in the same shade—this monochrome pairing will make it look like you’re wearing a stylized set (and it’s flattering too!). “It’s more of a polished, power statement when the denim matches,” she explains. Then, ground the look with an understated top underneath—you can’t go wrong with a half-tucked white tee or black bodysuit.

It’s also important to consider the shape of each piece when pairing denim on denim. It’s about playing with complementing proportions, explains Krista, so if you do an oversized jacket on the top, you’ll want to do a skinnier fit on the bottom, or vice-versa. “You can do denim in either proportions, anything goes really, but remember to stick to the silhouettes that you know work for your body type,” she says.

Finally, as with anything you wear, make the look feel like you! “Fashion is instant language,” says Krista, so double-denim is only twice as nice if it feels authentic and representative of you. Edit your outfit with accessories and glam that lets your personality shine, and you’re good to go!
