Your Favorite Outfit From 2004 is Back
The look that ruled most of the 2000s is creeping its way back into our closets, but this time with an elevated air. Your matching top-and-bottom velour or satin sweatsuit a la today calls for extra stylish sophistication.
“The most noticeable difference is the cut of the pants,” explains celebrity stylist Christina Pacelli, whose clients Laverne Cox, Maria Menounos, and Ariel Winter. A higher-rise waistband and tailored fit that shows your shape is key. “Avoid bagginess in the legs and the backseat,” says Christina. “It’s just not a flattering look and it looks outdated.” Instead, find bottoms that fit snugly at your center but have a bit of room in the hips and thighs to glide over your curves rather than hide them. Lastly, make sure the hemline is either cropped above your ankle or tapered—too-long and too-wide is too 2004.

The most noticeable difference is the pants.
There are a couple of ways to go on top. If you want to leave the coordinating jacket open or draped over your shoulders, do a simple tank, tee, or bodysuit underneath. If you wear it closed or zipped up most the way, the overall look becomes a little bit more of a statement. Whichever way you go, the right fit, once again, will be key to modernizing the outfit. The jacket or pullover portion of the sweatsuit should hit around the top of the pants to help show off your shape and elevate the look.
As for the accessories, trade in the flip-flops and chokers for more up-to-date details. Christina recommends a cool belt to really take the trend to the next level “Wear [the jacket] closed and break things up with a corset belt. Wear it open and add a corset belt over the t-shirt,” she suggests. “It adds a bit of sexiness and surprise plus gives a flattering silhouette.”

It’s still a throwback look, so I love adding a sock to it and a cool sneaker with the pants tucked in for an updated streetwear take.
But the most important accessory when it comes to taking this look into new times? “It’s a lot about the shoes,” says Christina. With a more tailored fit this time around, the sweatsuit trend not only lets your footwear be a part of the overall outfit, but it also allows for dressier styling. For evening, don a sleek pair of booties or strappy heels. For a fun statement-making twist, Christina recommends adding a pair of athletic tube socks with your stiletto sandals. The detail is a nice nod to the fashion of former times, but with the overall aesthetic up to date, it won’t look dated. During the day, have fun with this styling tip alongside your tennis shoes too. “It’s still a throwback look, so I love adding a sock to a cool sneaker with the pants tucked in for an updated streetwear take,” says Christina.
