The Coolest Comeback Pieces in Fashion Right Now
From his days as the Men’s Fashion Editor at Dazed and Confused in the 90s, to the stylist on set for our Good American campaigns, Simon Robins has proven that his fashion aesthetic transcends the times. As the trends of yesterday make their way back around, he offers his expertise on updating the look in a way that speaks to today.
The Bucket Hat
The '90s called, and they’re happy with the hottest trend of headwear right now. The bucket hat has made quite a comeback, showing up on and off the runway on the industry’s most influential figures (cough, Rihanna, cough). Simon says the accessory is a do, and even styled Slick Woods in Good American’s own rendition of the bucket hat for a recent campaign. “I’ve always loved the bucket hat,” he shares. “I especially love how girls are mixing them into looks with dresses and skirts. Before, it was more of an androgynous or sporty accessory, and this styling makes it more modern.”
Fanny Packs
The bag you remember from back in the day is making its mark this season, this time with an elevated twist. “I think the main difference between then and now is how the fanny pack is carried,” explains Simon. “We’re seeing it being worn like a cross-body bag now, and before they were styled around the waist…like how your dad would wear it!” As for whether or not it’s a trend worth re-investing in, Simon is a fan of the practicality, but warns that it may be overplayed. To wear it in a way that’s unique, he says, get bold by layering multiple mini-cross body bags. “I love it when a couple are worn at the same time, or when you clip on coin purses or trinkets onto the strap or chain.”

Bike Shorts
Bike shorts are proving to be the street style piece of 2018, worn alongside sneakers, strappy sandals, and everything in between. Unlike the ones from your 90s workout videos, though, the styles of today are a little more high-waisted and boast better shaping fabric, explains Simon. He likes the idea of playing into the past when styling bike shorts today, though. “You can either style them like Princess Diana coming from the gym, with an oversized logo sweatshirt and dad trainers like the ones Off-White did this season. Or, wear them the Nene Cherry way with a bra top, chunky gold jewelry, door knocker earrings, and an oversize MA1 jacket—a look made famous by 90s stylist Ray Petri!”
Neon
“I think neon this time around is much cooler!” confirms Simon of highlighter hues, complimenting Alyx and Prada for their recent takes on the trend. To ground this style for every day, he suggests pairing with neutrals. “I love a neon pop with an all-black outfit—black jeans with a black jacket, and then a bright pink bag, or shoe, or even both! Neon also looks good mixed with army green or khaki,” he continues. “Very 90s Prada!”

School-Girl Plaid
Plaid has never properly gone away, but it definitely fell off our radar since the 90s. Simon says that the print is back, and this time, the styling is “less Clueless and more all-American sex pot.” “I love mixing different textures and scales of plaid in the same outfit,” he says. “A plaid overload looks so fresh.”
